(Continued from previous page) eating a banana. It disappeared into the darkness, and she wondered if maybe it was a rat. It left the peal like a tourist would leave a Cracker-Jack box on the ground at Coney Island. Rain fell. She smelled wet wood burning and heard two men singing in a language she didn't understand. Near the banana peel, ants carried bits of dirt up a bamboo post and across a bamboo beam. When she turned to find the source of the ant column, she saw the crackling fire and two men dressed in ragged clothes. |
